AS FEATURED IN CORPORATE MEETINGS AND EVENTS – DECEMBER 2013
A case study of how to handle a legislative curveball
by Kristin Hosie
TICO became somewhat of a bad word in the Ontario event planning industry over the last couple of years. It came as a surprise and shock to many planners that legislation was in place requiring them to become registered with the Travel Industry Council of Ontario in order to provide travel services to their clients, something that had been common practice for ages.
But Ontario isn’t the only province that has this requirement – both Quebec and British Columbia also require planners to offer a similar form of Consumer Travel Protection. Currently, talks are occurring in Manitoba to legislate this as well. When the act was passed in 2002, the province of Ontario gave the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) responsibility for the administration of the Act.

Ruby Sky Event Planning Inc. Hosts a
Luxurious Familiarization Day
Barrie based Ruby Sky Event Planning Inc. recently hosted a familiarization trip for their clients in downtown Toronto. A day oozing in luxury began at the newly opened Ritz Carlton Toronto with a tour of the beautiful hotel, treatments in the Spa, a session with in-house yoga guru YogaGurl followed by lunch on the patio of DEQ. With tours of the TIFF Bell Lightbox and a challenging tournament of ping-pong at Toronto’s hotspot SPiN on King St. West, the excitement continued to build. Cocktails on the patio at Jamie Kennedy’s location at the Gardiner Museum, followed by an intimate 3-course meal hosted by Jamie Kennedy himself. Falling into the luxurious beds at the Ritz after all of this, was a great end to a fabulous day of networking.
